The MArch Architecture programme expands the 鈥榟ands-on鈥� ethos of our highly esteemed BArch Architecture course to integrate industry and research further. Students engage with the very latest thinking and technologies in architecture and urban design to foster innovative applications for our global future.

The programme is structured around a student-centred learning approach and ‘research by design’ pedagogy that provides a flexible framework from which you can deliver design experimentation and entrepreneurial thinking by taking advantage of the broad ecosystem of actors and resources that our integrated design lab approach affords.

The first year will be a flexible learning year designed to support a personalised learning journey, with block-release weeks at our London campus. The second year will be delivered at 天堂视频, allowing you to construct and test designs of full-scale prototypes using our studio space, our newly refurbished, dedicated studio space environment, VR and digital fabrication labs, and over 3,000m2 of workshops. The focus will be on a research-led design module that will integrate the dissertation and global future(s) modules as part of a holistic, studio-based approach to architectural design and entrepreneurship.

Design labs focus on specialised areas of design research to establish a unique identity for each lab, allowing you to test speculative lines of enquiry as part of an iterative and reflective design process, providing the opportunity to develop visonary and robust design propositions. Each student has an allocated workspace, which allows cross-fertilisation of ideas for the formation of a lively, tight-knit creative culture.

Engaging with different technologies has been a great alternative to standard learning methods. The use of virtual reality tools to design and visualise 3D concepts has motivated me to further understand how humans truly engage with spaces.

Using LU-ARC鈥檚 open M1 research framework, I was given the freedom to push and showcase machine learning (ML) as a creative architectural design collaborator. We are seeking accreditation by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) as a 鈥楶art 2鈥� course. Applicants without a Part 1 qualification should note that although they may secure a place on and successfully complete the MArch and be awarded a 'Part 2' qualification, they will still need separately to obtain a Part 1 qualification (plus a Part 3) to enable registration with the ARB.

What you'll study

The following information is intended as an example only and is typically based on module information for the 2024/25 year of entry. Modules are reviewed on an annual basis and may be subject to future changes. Updated are made available ahead of each academic year. The programme is delivered over two years. The first year of the programme will be a flexible learning year designed to support a personalised learning journey, offering the opportunity to choose from a Practice Pathway or a Research Pathway.

The Practice Pathway is suitable for those currently working in industry in the UK, as well as those who are interested in work-based learning and can secure a UK-based work placement before the start of the programme. While your work-based experience undertaken during your MArch studies feeds into your studies, it does not count in terms of your minimum 24 months of professional practice experience.  

The Research Pathway is suitable for those who have a strong interest in driving a self-led research by design agenda. Students are able to focus their studies on a particular area of interest (e.g. AI, ecological design) and develop a personalised roadmap to tailor their growth and achievements over the year. The Research Pathway also offers the opportunity for a limited work-based learning experience (via the hybrid route).

Year 1

This module curates a personalised learning journey in advanced architectural design, customised by students and comprising three potential pathways:

  • Pathway I is practice-led with students engaging on practice-led design projects by linking academic design studio learning with their work experience in practice
  • Pathway II is research-led with students developing research-led design projects by mobilising real world scenarios and urban contexts
  • A hybrid route is also possible (Pathway III) whereby students engage in either pathway per semester

The aims of this module are to:

  • Apply the knowledge and skills gained in Part I architecture training to an architectural proposition with increased complexity and a more detailed technical resolution, addressing issues of urban design and placemaking
  • Practice advanced architectural thinking by demonstrating originality in problem definition and design proposition
  • Enhance technical skills to produce a set of architectural drawings at the level of technical documentation, communicate design considerations and intertwine the two aspects into an architectural proposal
  • Enhance the understanding of the complex relationship and holistic understanding between technical and design aspects of architecture and built environment practice
  • Mobilise architectural theory and research evidence to develop students’ critical thinking in design and their understanding on social, economic, cultural and environmental impact of architecture
  • Develop the understanding of the regulatory, legislative and ethical context for the project

The aims of this module are for students to:

  • Examine the opportunities, constraints and realities of professional practice
  • Recognise the architect's responsibility to society
  • Analyse the supply chain, procurement management processes and the role of architect as an actor and stakeholder within them
  • Apply critical evaluation of architectural practice, its modes and processes of operation both as public service and business
  • Demonstrate understanding of the specific requirements of a role within practice to include observations on issues including leadership, prioritisation, crisis management and ethics

The aims of this module are for students to:

  • Debate the contribution of architectural and urban design theories towards the creation of sustainable urban futures
  • Critically appraise disciplinary boundaries in urban studies and demonstrate an understanding of present urban challenges as multi-dimensional issues by applying complex analytical thinking through cross-disciplinary lenses
  • Demonstrate a social, ethical, cultural and ecological awareness of the differential impacts of design across a range of cultural contexts, settlement types and scales
  • Evaluate the use of practical and speculative design tools as currently applied in the professional remit for the design and production of urban form

The aims of this module are for students to:

  • Discuss the complexity of multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder contributions to the process of design
  • Synthesise theoretical domains to develop new conceptual and practical interpretations of the architectural artefact
  • Examine models of users and occupiers and their spatial relationships through transdisciplinary methodologies of spatial agency and cognition, experience design, behavioural studies, psychology and phenomenology
  • Evaluate state of the art technologies, e.g. in computer science, digital humanities, gaming and simulation, fabrication and manufacturing, and their potential contributions and uses in architectural practice
  • Critically assess and debate the entrepreneurial potential of architecture in the context of contemporary professional challenges
  • Demonstrate the process of design experimentation and prototyping by crafting bespoke design methods, tools and/or `making' processes

Where you'll study

Our Architecture degrees have their own dedicated building, the Keith Green building, as well as studio spaces in the University鈥檚 Sir David Davies building, where you will have your own workspace to conduct your studies.

The buildings front an open green space, the archi-quad, which will operate as an interactive test ground for architectural interventions. You will also have access to our outstanding 3,000m2 laboratory, where you will test and explore ideas using traditional workshops, digital fabrication tools and research labs.

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are listed using standard UK undergraduate degree classifications i.e. first-class honours, upper second-class honours and lower second-class honours. To learn the equivalent for your country, please choose it from the drop-down below.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom

A portfolio submission and interview will form part of the admissions process for candidates that have earned a first or 2:1 on their Part 1 course.

In cases where an exceptional portfolio and interview score is achieved by a candidate with a 2:2, an offer may be made. Consideration of job prospects form part of the criteria given the structure of year one.

To undertake the MArch, all students must complete the entire course with 天堂视频. Candidates should note that there is no provision for direct entry to the second year of the course, nor is there any opportunity to study abroad at another University for any period of the course.

The first year of the programme is a flexible learning year with student-chosen pathways and block-release teaching delivered at our London campus, meaning students will be charged at 60% of the annual tuition fee. The second year is based at our 天堂视频 campus and will be charged at the standard annual tuition rate as stated above.

Tuition fees are reviewed annually by the University and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures. UK tuition fees align with the applicable fee caps set by the UK government, and as such they are subject to changes made to the agreed cap in a specific year.

The School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering is committed to helping you develop the skills and attributes you need to progress successfully in your chosen career.

Our Architecture MArch will develop your skills in team working, oral and visual communication, numeracy, creative problem-solving and managing the lifecycle and the successful realisation of an architectural project.

The programme pushes the boundaries of architectural innovation through emerging and timely design explorations at the interface of research and practice. It will guide students through personalised and flexible learning pathways to foster entrepreneurial thinking and prototyping for sustainable urban futures.

As a new programme, employment opportunities will build off the well-established and fruitful relationships of the undergraduate BArch Architecture programme, with students securing employment in the UK and abroad.

Many of our industry partners engage with the University’s research and in delivering guest lectures and design studio workshops, providing an ideal opportunity for you to discuss employment opportunities.
